Digital Pathology - the Great Solution from Past to Future

Despite the increasing importance of genetic sequencing technologies, cell and tissue morphology supplemented with in situ molecular information is still a crucial cornerstone of pathology used for diagnosing disease entities, determining biomarkers related to their prognosis and predicting response to therapy. The advent of digital microscopy has revolutionized all aspects of histopathology from teaching, through diagnostics, teleconsultation and quality assurance to the exploitation of artificial intelligence for supporting decision making. Digital slides integrated into hospital databases and beyond allow the full digitalization of the pathology service and provide access without physical and temporal borders to expert consultations and cooperative research among distant institutions.

The goal of this Special Issue is to highlight the achievements, challenges and future direction of digital pathology and to support the flourishing of this exciting field. We want to invite leading pathology and research groups to share their experience and results with us through manuscripts focused on any major aspects of pathology utilizing digitalization and whole digital slides. Potential areas of interest for both original research and review articles may include, but are not limited to:
• Implementation of sample and digital slide tracing.
• Database integration systems used for diagnostics and teleconsultations.
• Digital image analysis using machine learning and artificial intelligence.

Even though abstract submission is not mandatory, we encourage all interested researchers to submit an abstract before submitting their manuscript. Abstracts do not have to coincide with the final abstract of the manuscripts.
